Fibers were drawn with graphite induction heating furnace and controlled temperature, relative humidity and particle count of the draw environment. Dynamic fatigue of the drawn fibers was measured with two
different modes of loading, tensile & two-point bending. Draw humidity was found to have a decided impact on dynamic fatigue measured by tensile loading.

Fiber sample on shipping spools are tested for
attenuation, wave-guide parameters (Mode Field Diameter, Cut-off wavelength, Dispersion) and geometry parameters (glass and coat geometry). Here underlying assumption is that the end test value is same at any point of fiber sample.

The mechanical reliability of single mode optical fiber is determined by the presence of surface flaws such as particles from the atmosphere during drawing or abrasion damage of the
fiber surface by physical contact with any hard surface or drawing equipment and its size distribution, which are produced by normal fiber production methods. Proof testing is a common technique to ensure minimum strength of the fiber and eliminate flaws.

For mechanical reliability of optical fiber in rigorous
environments, robust coating system and optimization of critical coating related parameters are required. Stability of optical fiber coating in hot water (85ºC) in terms of strength degradation and adhesion to glass can be used to evaluate robustness of the coating system for mechanical reliability requirement.

Duct & Direct-Buried cables have always been the mainstay for all OSP applications. Rodent attacks
have been a major cause for heavy maintenance cost of such networks and is a threat to service operators in almost all geographic locations of the world.
